In a heartwarming display of community partnership, American Legion Post 42 in Evanston, IL, joined forces with the Colonial Dames for their longstanding Valentines for Vets initiative. For several years, the Colonial Dames have crafted handmade Valentine cards to brighten the days of veterans in hospitals and recovery centers, reminding them they are appreciated, remembered, and honored for their service.

This year, the program gained new momentum when Post 42 stepped in to handle delivery—a logistical challenge the Dames previously faced without a reliable solution. On February 1, 2026, a dedicated group of Colonial Dames gathered at a member's home in Wilmette, IL, to hand-create 80 beautiful, personalized valentines filled with messages of gratitude and warmth.

Post 42 Commander Christine Candelario and Service Officer Joe Jefferson visited to collect the cards, express sincere thanks to the hardworking Dames, and commit to distributing them across Chicagoland's North Shore and surrounding areas.

The valentines will bring smiles, comfort, and a tangible reminder that their sacrifices are never forgotten.Thank you to the Colonial Dames for their thoughtful craftsmanship and to Post 42 for ensuring these messages reach those who need them most.

Together, we're making Valentine's Day a little brighter for our heroes.
